Podcasting is gaining in popularity as people want to be able to broadcast their own audio information over the internet. The term podcasting comes from a combination of the words IPod and broadcasting. To be able to podcast one needs to have the correct podcasting equipment. This includes a microphone of sufficient quality to ensure good sound, a mixer, a home based computer, speakers and an audio interface to connect to your computer. You will also need an internet connection to be able to get your podcast out to others on the net. Depending on what type of podcast you are planning you may also want to be able to connect your CD player into your system. This allows for background music or music to play during breaks.

Of the items that you need the most important one is the microphone. This is especially true if you are on a limited budget. The important thing to do is to ensure that the microphone that you buy is a really good one. You cannot do anything to improve the sound quality of a poor microphone. Yet, a good microphone can compensate for a lesser quality sound system. An okay microphone will cost at least one hundred dollars. But, when buying your podcasting equipment expect to spend at least two hundred and fifty dollars on a really good one.

The next most important item of equipment that is needed is the mixer. It is where you plug the microphone into. You will want several features form your mixer. First you want it to be able to deal with different kinds of sounds, not just your basic audio from your microphone. This is a good idea because it means that over time you can add in more varied equipment. Even though the initial outlay may seem high over time you will see how it will save you money. It is suggested that the right mixer have a minimum of twelve channels but no more than sixteen. The digital features, including the ability to eliminate unwanted background noises, and the quality of the equipment are other considerations when you pick the podcasting equipment you want to purchases.
